Get to Know Our Program!

The Leadership Development Program (LDP) is designed for youth who have an interest in developing their leadership skills. The program is divided into two segments based on age.

The LDP is the first step to becoming a D-Camps counsellor. Many of our staff team have been through the program and it shows!

Camp Life

This program will develop leadership skills through hands-on experiences, high-quality coaching and guidance from trained staff and consistent feedback. The goal of the LDP is to have your youth return from camp with an increase in confidence, skills to lead a group and an increased understanding of the qualities of a leader.

The LDP cabin at Camp Jean Nelson is set apart from the camper dorms. This beautiful, rustic cabin is equipped with bunk beds, running water, a wood stove and the best view at Camp Jean Nelson!

Our Participants

Aimed at teens ages 16 to 17, our program accepts 20 participants.

LDP 1

LDP 1 is for youth who have turned 16 prior to June 30, 2016. In this program, participants will be led by our LDP Facilitators. These facilitators will work with the participants (LDP 1s) to develop basic leadership skills like conflict resolution, communicating clearly, setting goals for yourself and others, leading by example among other important attributes of a leader.

LDP 2

LDP 2 is for youth who have turned 17 prior to June 30, 2016. In this program, participants (LDP 2s) will be led by our senior LDP facilitators. These facilitators will work with the LDP 2s to further develop leadership skills with a focus on being a leader in the camp community. Skills like camper care, dealing with homesickness, planning and leading programs and games and being a positive type 1 diabetes role model. LDP 2s will be spending a substantial portion of their time at camp shadowing counselors in a cabin group. They will have the opportunity to use the skills they are developing and receive feedback from the D-Camps staff team.

Our Staff

The LDP is headed up by a leadership director and leadership facilitators who complement the existing program and medical staff at Camp Jean Nelson.

Selection Criteria

As part of the registration and selection process, all candidates to D-Camps Leadership Development Programs (LDP) will be required to submit a written application. This application consists of a 400-word essay which answers the following questions:

  • 1. Why do you want to be a part of the LDP?
  • 2. What do you think you can bring to the group and the camp community?
  • 3. What do you want to learn from the program? How will you apply it away from camp?

Please apply by March 31st, 2016. Late or incomplete applications may not be considered.

Individual interviews may be conducted as part of the selection process and positions will be offered based on: LDP application, interview and region specific factors. Once all positions have been offered, a waitlist will be created, and applicants would then be admitted to the program as positions become available.

Our Activities

Learn to Lead

Over the course of the LDP 1 program, participants will participate in the following activities:

Hard Skill Development - Low ropes initiates, outdoor living skills, high ropes and leading an all camp wide- program.

Soft Skill Development - Conflict resolution, problem solving, team work, communication, goal setting and being a positive role model. Excursion -LDP1’s will participate in an offsite excursion either hiking in the Rockies, white water rafting or camping.

Over the course of the LDP 2 program, participants will be spending a substantial portion of their time at camp shadowing counselors in a cabin group. They will have the opportunity to use the skills they are developing and receive feedback from the D-Camps staff team.In addition they should expect participate in the following activities:

Camp Jean Nelson 2017 Dates and Rates

We understand that every family’s budget is different. We have developed a three-tiered pricing program to help cover costs for those who need financial support. Regardless of the amount paid your child’s experience at camp will not change.

Even at tier one, roughly half of the costs of camp are subsidized by the Diabetes Canada. Please choose the tier that represents what your family can afford for a D-Camps experience. We truly appreciate your support in helping us continue to provide memorable camping experiences to children with type 1 diabetes across Canada.

If tier three will be a challenge for you and your family to afford please fill out the ‘Financial Assistance Form’ sent to you through the registration process. If you have decide to pay tier one, two or three please note you do not need to fill out the ‘Financial Assistance Form’
