Camp Douwanna

Get to Know Our Program!

This program is designed for those who have a set of skills that they wish to develop further as they strive to become a member of the camp staff family.
The program engages youth in a recreational environment while challenging them to further develop their own leadership skills, learn the operations of camping program, gain experience working with children in a mentorship environment and heighten their own personal growth in camping.

Camp Life

Located at the site of Camp Douwanna on the shore of Southwest Pond, the Leadership Development Program has ample space for field sports and more. Featuring 10 cabins that can house 10 campers each, there is also a main lodge which accommodates dining and indoor programs, and a scenic waterfront that hosts our swimming and canoeing programs.

Participants will stay in cabins nestled together in a half circle facing the main lodge. All of the cabins have electricity and are equipped with bathrooms and showers.

Selection Criteria

As part of the registration and selection process, all candidates to D-Camps Leadership Development Programs (LDP) will be required to submit a written application. This application consists of a 400-word essay which answers the following questions:

  • 1. Why do you want to be a part of the LDP?
  • 2. What do you think you can bring to the group and the camp community?
  • 3. What do you want to learn from the program? How will you apply it away from camp?

Please apply by March 31st, 2016. Late or incomplete applications may not be considered.

Individual interviews may be conducted as part of the selection process and positions will be offered based on: LDP application, interview and region specific factors. Once all positions have been offered, a waitlist will be created, and applicants would then be admitted to the program as positions become available.

The process values can be broken down as such

  • 60% for applicant interview (20% leadership/volunteer/community experience, 20% experience with children, 10% reason for applying, 10% personality and demeanour)
  • 30% for application essay
  • 10% personal references and staff recommendations

All applicants will take part in an interview that will be conducted by the Leadership Development Program Co-Director. All interviews will be scheduled in advance around the applicant’s schedule. Applicants will have the option of a phone interview or an in person interview at their local Canadian Diabetes Association office.

LDP participants will cover topics related to working at camp as well as general leadership techniques they can use in their home community. Topics include: conflict resolution, managing behaviour, team building and empowerment.

Activity

The participants attend Camp Douwanna (plus one additional training day) for their summer of training. The few days are lesson-orientated sessions and the remainder of the week is a practicum-style session to gain hands-on experience working with campers.

Camp Douwanna 2017 Dates and Rates

We understand that every family’s budget is different. We have developed a three-tiered pricing program to help cover costs for those who need financial support. Regardless of the amount paid your child’s experience at camp will not change.

Even at tier one, roughly half of the costs of camp are subsidized by Diabetes Canada. Please choose the tier that represents what your family can afford for a D-Camps experience. We truly appreciate your support in helping us continue to provide memorable camping experiences to children with type 1 diabetes across Canada.

If tier three will be a challenge for you and your family to afford please fill out the ‘Financial Assistance Form’ sent to you through the registration process. If you have decide to pay tier one, two or three please note you do not need to fill out the ‘Financial Assistance Form’
