Get to Know Our Program!

Camp Discovery’s Leadership Development Program (LDP) is designed to teach youth leadership lessons which are applicable to all areas of their life. By building self-esteem and confidence, learning about community service, and understanding group dynamics and team building, our youth will leave these programs ready to lead themselves and others through their transition from teenagers to young adults.

Challenger Leadership Development Program 2 Extended (LDP 2X)

New in 2016, this program gives LDP 2 participants the exciting opportunity to test and expand their skills in a joint Camp Banting-Camp Discovery LDP.

Participants will take part in the Challenger LDP2 at Camp Banting and then further hone their counselling and leadership skills during a five-day placement with a Camp Discovery cabin. During this time LDP participants will be supervised and supported by a dedicated staff member, who will ensure they are supported to meet their leadership goals!

Transportation will be provided between Camp Banting (Ottawa) and Camp Discovery (London).

Our LDP participants at Camp Banting will be staying at Over the Hill, sleeping in large tents on tent platforms. Over the Hill is equipped with Kybos, running water and a fire pit.

While at Camp Discovery, LDP 2X participants will be placed in cabin groups with Camp Discovery campers and staff.

Selection Criteria

As part of the registration and selection process, all candidates to D-Camps Leadership Development Programs (LDP) will be required to submit a written application. This application consists of a 400-word essay which answers the following questions:

  • 1. Why do you want to be a part of the LDP?
  • 2. What do you think you can bring to the group and the camp community?
  • 3. What do you want to learn from the program? How will you apply it away from camp?

Please apply by March 31st, 2016. Late or incomplete applications may not be considered.

Individual interviews may be conducted as part of the selection process and positions will be offered based on: LDP application, interview and region specific factors. Once all positions have been offered, a waitlist will be created, and applicants would then be admitted to the program as positions become available.

Growing Together

The leadership program also provides participants with the opportunity to obtain a variety of certifications that can help prepare them for future employment with D-Camps or other opportunities:

The leadership out-trip will be more challenging than previous Camp Discovery out-trips. Participants are encouraged to check the LDP handbook for additional packing and prep information.

Camp Discovery 2017 Dates and Rates

We understand that every family’s budget is different. We have developed a three-tiered pricing program to help cover costs for those who need financial support. Regardless of the amount paid your child’s experience at camp will not change.

Even at tier one, roughly half of the costs of camp are subsidized by Diabetes Canada. Please choose the tier that represents what your family can afford for a D-Camps experience. We truly appreciate your support in helping us continue to provide memorable camping experiences to children with type 1 diabetes across Canada.

If tier three will be a challenge for you and your family to afford please fill out the ‘Financial Assistance Form’ sent to you through the registration process. If you have decide to pay tier one, two or three please note you do not need to fill out the ‘Financial Assistance Form’
